Wood

From the change wiki

Wood is both a material and a fuel. It comes from cutting down trees.

Research needed

Global production of wood

  • By source type
    • Tree farms
      • Yields: how much wood per day per acre?
    • Old growth
  • By product grade
    • Lumber
    • Firewood
    • Pulp/paper
    • Sawdust
    • Other?

What would happen if global production increased? More old-growth forests would be converted to tree farms, I would assume?

Are tree farms usually monoculture? Do they have to be? What are the tradeoffs?

Is it possible to set up a tree farm with almost as much biodiversity as old growth forests? There would still be the animal cruelty aspect of destroying the habitats of animals that congregate there, but it might not be that bad if there's never any clear-cutting, and if new trees are planted at the same rate they're cut. Is this scenario worth exploring?
