Motivations

  • If we want the average person to trust science, then the science has to be freely accessible.
  • Whenever a government policy is said to be based on scientific knowledge, the public deserves the right to verify it.

Cost

  • Academic journal websites could be kept up (ad-free) with probably just 1/1000th as much money as governments already allocate to research grants.
    • Text-based websites don't take that much to maintain (unless there's code bloat).
