Deforestation

Forests removed to make way for agriculture

Deforestation (destruction of forests) is a type of habitat loss (an ecological harm).

Cattle ranching (pasture) is a main reason for rainforest deforestation

Causes

Forests are typically cleared to make room for agriculture (especially animal agriculture) which needs a lot of land.

Effects

  • Endangered species go extinct.
  • Carbon is released into the atmosphere (climate change).

Solutions

Reducing the amount of land needed for food:

  • Tree farming for wood production - surprisingly not a significant contributor to deforestation.
  • Old growth forests - the most important forests to protect
  • Hunger - Solving global hunger should not be pitted against solving deforestation.
