Green hydrogen from fossil fuels?
Is it thermodynamically possible to extract the hydrogen from fossil fuel molecules while leaving behind solid carbon (not oxidized to CO2)?
Example chemical formula: CH4 -> 2 H2 + C
Of course this is only worthwhile if it takes less energy than you would get from burning the H2 later.
If it is viable, maybe we could get all our energy from fossil fuels and just "burn the hydrogen, not the carbon"?
