Lack of analog controls

Why it's a problem

  • If the battery dies or the software has a glitch, the access is gone.
    • Babies have been locked in cars this way. TODO: add link
  • More expensive, with no real tangible improvement.
  • Internally, all the same analog components still exist - you just can't reach them. So none of the "old-fashioned problems" are prevented anyway.
  • In the case of touchscreens in cars, the driver can't use it without taking their eyes off the road (whereas analog controls can be felt - muscle memory makes them easier to use over time).

What motivated companies to do this to products

  • Superficially, the all-digital controls seem more "technologically advanced". This impresses shareholders.
  • People who criticize the lack of analog controls, are labelled as anti-tech boomer luddites. Proper discourse doesn't happen often enough.
