• People don't take up very much space on Earth in general (although agriculture does).
• People tend to be clustered in or near cities. This includes everyone who lives in suburbs. Even most people who live in the country (rural life) are near cities. An hour drive from a downtown (for example) might be a lot of gas, but it's not a lot of distance on a world map.
