Stuff hut

From the change wiki

A "stuff hut" (for lack of better words) is a public place where you can put stuff you don't need(...)( i.e. if you're decluttering your home or moving ), for anyone to take for free.

  • Like a [little free library], but bigger (about the size of a bus stop) and for more than just books.
  • Unlike a thrift shop, it can hold things that aren't sellable but still usable.
  • Better than putting things at the curb, where things can get rained on / picked up by garbage trucks.

Challenges

  • There is still going to be some amount of things that no one takes, which might pile up over time. Sooner or later they will have to go elsewhere, and if no one wants them then they have to end up in the trash, unfortunately. We can't avoid 100% of waste, but we can get pretty close. There are some things that don't seem valuable now that might be in a few decades: Photos, tapes, CDs, currently-out-of-fashion clothes, etc. Society probably needs more ways to archive stuff efficiently. For now, hoarders are the ones attempting this work without much help.

Implementation

  • Most cities don't have [stuff huts]. Campaign to have a few built!
  • For now, if you have old things that thrift shops won't take, consider putting them neatly in a box in a bus stop (the kind with a glass shelter). Hopefully someone will take some. It also helps to remove any trash on the ground of the bus stop, so people don't think your stuff is trash.
